CTRC Officially Joins UT Health Science Center
The Cancer Therapy Research Center (CTRC),
located in San Antonio, TX, became a center of the UT
Health Science Center at San Antonio. The UT System
Board of Regents authorized the acquisition, which took
effect on December 17, 2007.

The UT Health Science Center Receives 17% Boost in Federal Funding in 2007
The UT Health Science Center's federal
funding increased 17% during the university's fiscal
year 2007, compared to fiscal year 2006. This increase
includes a 9% hike in NIH funding, as well as a 13% increase
from other federal funding sources.

Brown Foundation Gives $4 million for Aging Research
The Brown Foundation, Inc. of Houston
donated $4 million to establish a state-of-the-art biomedical
research facility for age-related diseases.

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Bestows Awards
The keynote speaker, Larry Barnes, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Biochemistry and associate dean of the Graduate School, discussed a new initiative that will result in an integrated multidisciplinary graduate program focusing on thematic tracks. Development of that initiative will continue this year, he said.
Pharmacology Graduate Students, Fellow to Present Research
Alexandre Seillier, Ph.D., was selected as a recipient of the SfN Postdoctoral Trainee Travel Award to present his research, "Characterization of the endocannabinoid system in the sub-chronic PCP rat model of schizophrenia."
Valero Donation Includes $1 Million for the Valero MD/PhD Excellence Fund
Mr. Bill Klesse, Chairman and CEO of the
Valero Energy Corporation, announced a donation of $5
million to the UTHSCSA.

Six Faculty Named Distinguished Teaching Professors
The honor was bestowed by the Health Science Center with approval from The University of Texas Academy of Health Science Education due to their significant, outstanding contributions to education.
Williams Wins NIA Aging Research Dissertation Award
Against prodigious odds, Williams, the 2005 Ambassador Scholar from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, was successful in her application and is now experiencing both the responsibility and thrill of being a funded scientist.
Rahal First to Complete Radiology Resident-Ph.D. Program
Six years ago, the Department of Radiology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio became the first radiology department in the country to establish a Ph.D. program for radiology residents, and the program has become one that Harvard, Yale and other medical schools aspire to emulate.
Barshop Institute Symposium Honors Dr. James Smith
Dr. Smith, professor in the department of pathology, occupies the Ewing Halsell Distinguished Chair in Aging Research at the Health Science Center.

Throttling Up Tiny Power Plants May Protect Nerve Cells
The energy boost confers nearly as much protection to older cells as it does to younger cells, fostering hope that one day a medication for aging-related neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease or improved recovery from strokes could be based on this information.
Ran to Receive Nathan Shock New Investigator Award
Dr. Ran, who studies the relationship of oxidative damage and cell death in aging and Alzheimer's disease, is an assistant professor in the department of cellular and structural biology in the Health Science Center's Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Students Receive Awards and Honors
Elizabeth Lopez, a junior at John Jay Science and Engineering Academy, won several science fair awards for research performed last summer in the laboratory of Merry Lindsey, Ph.D., assistant professor in the department of medicine's division of cardiology.

Barshop Institute, Other NIA-Funded Centers Spotlighted
Three American research groups, including scientists from the Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, will announce interim findings this week of the first round of compounds studied in the National Institute on Aging (NIA) Interventions Testing Program.
UT Academy of Health Science Education to Induct Four Faculty Members
The academy is an organization of distinguished scholars recognized for their outstanding teaching abilities. The goal of the organization is to enhance health science education.

Stockand's Ion Channel Work Gains Him National Honor
Dr. Stockand is this year's APS Henry Pickering Bowditch Award Lecturer, an annual honor conferred to only one APS member under the age of 42.

These gifts combined allowed the Health Science Center to create, for the first time in its history, a $1 million President's Council Distinguished Chair awarded to an exceptional faculty member - John Hart, Ph.D.
