Studies conducted in Dr. Lisa Gerak’s lab investigate the behavioral effects of drugs, primarily benzodiazepines and opioids. Although the therapeutic potential of these drugs is undeniable, their clinical utility is reduced by adverse effects, including abuse liability and the development of tolerance and dependence.
This laboratory investigates the acute and chronic effects of opioids and benzodiazepines with a major focus on physical dependence and withdrawal. Highly quantitative behavioral and pharmacological procedures are used to improve our understanding of dependence and identify strategies to minimize the consequences of withdrawal.
