Dr. John R. McCarrey earned his Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of California, Davis and completed postdoctoral training with Dr. Susumu Ohno at the City of Hope in Duarte, California. He was a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health before moving to the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research in San Antonio in 1991. He then moved to the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2001, where he is currently Professor in the Department of Biology.
Dr. McCarrey was named the Robert and Helen Kleberg Distinguished Chair in Cellular & Molecular Biology in 2012, and he is the recipient of this year’s SSR Distinguished Service Award. Research in the McCarrey laboratory is centered on mammalian germ cells and stem cells. Dr. McCarrey’s group makes use of several experimental models, including the mouse, the baboon, and the opossum.
The lab is interested in the epigenetic regulation of cell functions, including determination of cell fates, maintenance of genetic integrity, regulation of gene expression, genomic imprinting, X-chromosome inactivation and meiotic sex chromosome inactivation.
Additional interests in the lab include epigenetic defects (“epimutations”) induced by methods of assisted reproduction, transgenerational epigenetic inheritance, the evolution of tissue-specific gene expression in mammalian species, and developing the baboon as a model system for testing stem cell-based therapeutic applications.
