Dr. David Cappelli is a professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry. He was awarded his Ph.D. in epidemiology from the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston, School of Public Health. Dr. Cappelli completed his residency education in dental public health from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Department of Community Dentistry and was awarded Diplomate status by the American Board of Dental Public Health.
He currently serves as the Director of the Research Division, Department of Comprehensive Dentistry. Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Cappelli served as Interim Chair, Department of Community Dentistry and Interim Associate Dean for Student Affairs.
Dr. Cappelli developed an extensive career in research, education and service. In 2011, Dr. Cappelli was awarded $3.1 million dollars from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for his research. One of these grants, Predoctoral Education in Dental Public Health, seeks to maintain and improve a comprehensive predoctoral dental public health curriculum. He received funding by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study oral-systemic linkages using a non-human primate model, including periodontal disease and pre-term birth/low birth weight and periodontal disease and HIV.
Dr. Cappelli directs a residency in dental public health that is also funded by HRSA. He published a textbook in 2008, Prevention in Clinical Oral Health Care, describing risk-based prevention strategies. He co-directs the course for first year dental students, Oral Health Promotion and Disease Prevention for Individuals and Populations.
Dr. Cappelli served as a leader in several national and state organizations, including the American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD), American Public Health Association, American Dental Education Association (ADEA), and the American Association for Dental Research.
He completed the ADEA Leadership Institute and the LEAD Institute at UTHSCSA. Dr. Cappelli currently serves as the President of the AAPHD, member of the Advisory Board of the San Antonio Christian Dental Clinic, Board of Directors of the Texas Oral Health Coalition, and founding member of the San Antonio Regional Oral Health Coalition.
