The University of Texas at San Antonio and UT Health at San Antonio are hosting the San Antonio Life Sciences (SALSI) symposium. The symposium will focus on the interface between aging and neurodegenerative diseases, will educate the wider research community about advancements in this fast-paced field and stimulate collaborative research in this area.

Keynote Presentations:
DR. JOSE ALEJANDRO LUCHSINGER
>> Dr. José Alejandro Luchsinger is the Florence Irving Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Professor of Epidemiology at the Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Luchsinger is the director of the Center on Aging and Health Disparities (CAHD) in the Division of General Medicine. Dr. Luchsinger’s research is focused on the relation of vascular, metabolic, and dietary on aging outcomes, primarily cognition, in diverse populations. His work has elucidated an important link between diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s Disease. Dr. Luchsinger research combines cohort studies, clinical trials, and cognition studies including brain imaging.

DR. LI-HUEI TSAI
>> Professor Li-Huei Tsai is the Director of the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Picower Professor of Neuroscience, and an Associate Member of the Broad Institute. Dr. Tsai is interested in elucidating the pathogenic mechanisms underlying neurological disorders that impact learning and memory. Recent contributions include the identification of chromatin remodeling as a means to regulate memory gene expression and enhance cognitive function during neurodegeneration. Currently, the Tsai lab uses iPSCs derived from human subjects to model AD and large-scale imaging, optogenetics, and in vivo electrophysiology to study the brain circuitry affected by AD.
