All applicants must apply to IBMS through the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.The priority application deadline for admission is January 1 (11:59 p.m. EST) with a final deadline of March 15.
Applicants are required to have a Bachelor's degree or a Master's degree and must have taken the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). GRE scores must be from tests taken within five years of applying for admission. While there is no official minimum requirement, successful applicants generally have a minimum combined score of 315. The minimum GPA is 3.0.
Chemistry- 1 year Inorganic and Organic Chemistry and associated laboratory courses
Analytical and Physical Chemistry recommended
Physics- 1 Year
Calculus- 1 Semester Calculus or Statistics
Biology - 2 years as required for Biology Majors
U.S. CITIZEN AND PERMANENT RESIDENT applicants must:
1)Apply through the online application here or go to https://app.decisiondesk.com/institution/uthscsa/apply
2) Create an account.
3) Select two Ph.D. program/department choices, in rank order. On the 'Program Selection' page of the application, click on Integrated Biomedical Sciences (IBMS)' and select your primary program.
4) Select "Physiology and Pharmacology" as the discipline you are interested in.You will have an opportunity to select your second program choice on the same page. These choices are not binding and will only be used for assignment of your application for review.
5) Provide a Statement of Purpose that describes in detail your undergraduate summer, clinical, industrial research and/or any teaching experiences that you are coming in with, and how UT Health San Antonio’s graduate program will help you meet your career and educational objectives. You will also be asked to identify up to 3 faculty members whose research you are particularly interested in.
6 ) Submit a Personal Statement that describes what you are passionate about and how that has led to an interest in research, including cultural, geographical, financial, educational or other opportunities or challenges, motivated your decision to pursue a graduate degree at UT Health San Antonio. Describe any major obstacles that you had to overcome to achieve your goals.
7) Solicit three letters of recommendation from research mentors or professors who can evaluate your academic and scientific potential. These letters must be sent electronically. As you complete the Graduate School of Biomedical Science application, you will have the opportunity to electronically send invitations to professors/mentors to submit letters of recommendation. It is highly recommended that you use the online system. If you are unable to use this system, you should contact Angela Watts ( email@example.com) immediately for further instructions.
8) Report your unofficial GRE scores within the application. Then upload a PDF of the report to your application for reference. Subject GRE scores are not required. Official GRE scores are only required if you’re accepted into the program and plan to matriculate.
9) Upload an unofficial electronic transcript directly into the online application by the deadline which you want to be considered by. You only need to upload transcripts from post-secondary institutions that will result in a degree. If accepted with the intent to matriculate into the program, submit an official transcript for any degrees earned or in progress to the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (not to IBMS).
On top of the requirements listed above, international/Non US Citizen have additional requirements including:
Report and submit proof of TOEFL or IELTS scores that are no more than 2 years old. Please note, this requirement can be waived if an applicant has a baccalaureate or higher degree from a US accredited institution. If an applicant plans to waive a TOEFL score they must contact Angela Watts ( firstname.lastname@example.org) at the time they submit their application.
Transcripts and GPA Requirements
Applicants transcripts must be translated into English and must be reported on a 4.0 scale. For the purposes of evaluating applications ONLY the Admissions committee of most programs will accept GPA calculated using the WES student version of the iGPA, which generates an overall GPA on a 4.0 scale.
