John Jay Science Fair Judges

The John Jay Science & Engineering Academy is hosting its annual Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday, December 2nd, 2017 from 8:30 am-1:00 pm and we are seeking volunteers to serve as judges for the fair.

Nearly 200 judges are required to provide feedback to our students. Our school fair is one of the largest of its kind in the state of Texas and the nation and includes nearly 600 students presenting their scientific research. Additionally, St. Mary's University and the University of the Incarnate Word reward top students at our local fair with $560,000 in scholarships each year.

Projects include the STEM areas of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Math and Computers as well as projects in the Social Sciences such as Psychology and Sociology. Project levels span beginner (freshmen) to advanced (upperclassmen). Because of this wide spectrum of topics and levels, we need a variety of volunteers with different experiences and levels of training/interest.

Students who do well will be given the opportunity to advance to the Junior Academy of Science Competition at Robert E. Lee High School, and to the Alamo Regional Science Fair at St. Mary’s University. Some students will then go on to participate at the state and national level. The 2015-2016 research team earned over $600,000 in scholarships, over $2,000 in cash prizes and 17 special awards.

Judges are asked to arrive at 8:30am for a light breakfast, brief welcome and folder pick-up that will include the categories that they will be judging and scoring rubrics. Lunch will be served from 11:30pm-1:30pm in the library. A certificate of participation will also be the judge's folder noting the number of volunteer hours.

Science Expo Volunteers Needed

1500 high school and college students from all around San Antonio and South Texas are expected to arrive on our campus for the event scheduled to occur on Saturday, November 11th from 8:00am-12:00noon on main campus.

The format of this event involves large groups of high school students moving around from table to table collecting information, watching and/or participating in demo's/experiments. The GSBS table will be doing strawberry DNA extraction again this year as that seemed to go over well.

The event strives to feature interactive, hands-on activities and presentations to give students a unique insight into what it would be like to enter the health professions and/or pursue research careers. Faculty, staff and students are invited to volunteer and share their expertise with the future health care professionals and researchers of tomorrow as well as to lead discussions, demonstrations, dissections, etc.

Please share this event with your student groups (WISDOM, SACNAS, GSA, BME group, Postdocs, etc) if you would like to set up a table on behalf of your group. Keep in mind that table experiments are not necessary- if you or your student group would prefer to do a presentation (40 minute sessions) you certainly may (i.e. career field, special topic related to your field, hands on teaching lab session).

For GSBS table participants:If you would like to participate with the GSBS, please respond KirkpatrickA@livemail.uthscsa.edu with this volunteer form

For individuals/other student groups: please fill out the attached form and submit to Dr. Chapa at chapai@uthscsa.edu

Note: If you need to purchase materials for your presentation, you will be reimbursed. Breakfast and event t-shirt will be provided to all who participate.

If you have any specific any questions about the event or your presentation please contact Dr. Chapa: chapai@uthscsa.edu
