UTHSCSA’s Graduate Student Association (GSA) is a student-led
organization that aims to unify the graduate student body, which includes
students in programs across our many campuses and even joint programs with
UTSA. The GSA’s mission focuses on three
main facets of the student experience: academic environment, activities, and
advocacy. To this end, events and
opportunities for students were highlighted at GSA’s first
general meeting of the 2014-2015 academic year.
At this initial meeting, students hailed from the Integrated
Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Radiological Sciences, Dental
Science, and Medical Physics graduate programs.
Officers Peter LoCoco, Stacey Stahl, Mikaela Sifuentes, Calais Williams,
and Elizabeth Fucich were introduced, as well as our new staff advisor Dr.
Teresa Evans. Upcoming events were
announced such as the HSC Gala and Student Dance on September 13 and the
GSA-hosted Biomedical Career Fair (1PM – 4PM) and Student Government Association’s
Chili Cook-off (5PM) on October 30.
Plans were discussed to host an even bigger Mikiten Research Forum in
the spring, which provides an opportunity for every graduate student to present
their research, no matter what stage.
Before raffling some sweet UTHSCSA bags and breaking out into a social
mixer, nominations were taken for officer elections that will take place in our
September general meeting, and students signed up for planning committees for
the career fair and research forum.
Check our website uthscsagsa.wordpress.com for
the slides from our first meeting, which also contain helpful details and
contact information regarding student services.
Also on the website, you can nominate yourself or someone you know for
an officer position before our September vote, or provide feedback on issues
you would like the GSA to advocate this year.
Please send any questions or ideas to your GSA officers at firstname.lastname@example.org,
and be on the look out for our next meeting announcement!
