Francisco González-Scarano, M.D., dean of the School of Medicine, recently announced that four basic science departments have undergone name changes “to reflect more accurately their current activities in research and education.”

“These name changes were undertaken at the behest of the department chair, and after consultation and votes on the most appropriate new name by faculty in the respective departments,” Dr. González said. “I believe that all of them are a positive change, and reflect well on our outstanding basic science faculty. It should be mentioned that the basic science department faculty members have increased their extramural research portfolio by an impressive 22 percent, a clear sign of vigor that preceded these name changes.”

The changes include:

- Microbiology & Immunology is now Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics

- Cellular & Structural Biology is now Cell Systems and Anatomy

- Biochemistry is now Biochemistry and Structural Biology

- Physiology is now Cellular and Integrative Physiology
