First EVER Graduate Trainee Organized Career Day on October 30 2014

Author: Elizabeth Fucich | Category: Around Campus | November 07, 2014

On Thursday, October 30, the Graduate Student Association (GSA) hosted the inaugural Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Career Day. Career Day was attended by undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows from StMU, UIW, TBRI, USAISR, UTHSCSA and UTSA, and consisted of a keynote speaker, 12 exhibitors, a Photo Booth sponsored by the UTHSCSA Postdoctoral (UP) Association, and 8 dynamic career development workshops.

Scientist, comedian, and writer Adam Ruben gave a knee-slapping show, emphasizing taking full advantage of your graduate training and taking charge of your future, as well as the importance of events like Career Day. While Adam signed copies of his book, including a copy for the raffle winner, trainees explored 12 exhibits representing local, national, and global employers, networking groups, and professional organizations. Attendees lined up to receive a free professional photo, courtesy of UP, and filled the classrooms for their opportunity to engage with field experts in

workshop discussions. Workshop leaders gave tips for building a résumé and interview skills and described careers as medical science liaisons, entrepreneurs, and academic educators. Additionally, trainees gained perspective on the different opportunities for research in academic, industrial, and military laboratories.

The workshops, keynote, and exhibitors shared a similar encouraging message—that the superb training at institutions like UTHSCSA will prepare trainees for any scientific career, and that resources like mentors, the Office of Career Development, and professional events like Career Day can be invaluable in your training.
