Dr. Sophie Piña, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs in the
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) will be leaving her position in
our Health Science Center to take a leadership position at the University of the
Incarnate Word (UIW) effective July 1, 2015.
All familiar with Dr. Piña know she has been a tireless
advocate for our students, not to mention an icon of our institution.
Dr. Piña obtained her Ph.D. here at the UT Health Science

joined the Graduate School Administrative team in September of 2005. In this
role, she was instrumental in shaping many GSBS initiatives.
For example, she developed and then enacted processes and
procedures for the multitude of student awards, developed strategies for
integrating foreign students into our city and school, and conceived, as well
as taught interprofessional leadership courses for our students.
Furthermore, essentially every thesis or dissertation passed
through her watchful eye to ensure they met GSBS guidelines.
In addition, Dr. Piña helped develop and run our unique, and
stellar, Voelcker Biomedical Research Academy Program, and the list goes on.
In her new role, Dr. Piña will be the Associate Dean of
Student Affairs at UIW and will be working very closely with the recently
introduced Physician’s Assistant Program and the soon to be launched School of
This is an exciting opportunity that will enable Dr. Piña to
use her vast talents and experience to help shape these new professional programs.
UIW’s gain is our loss.
Please mark your calendars for June 19, 4:00 p.m. to 5:30
p.m. in the President’s Conference Room, AAB 302, where we will be thanking Dr.
