William Bauta, Ph.D., Senior Vice President of Research and Development, Therapeutics
Dr. Bauta is a medicinal chemist with more than 25 years of experience in discovery, development and commercialization of pharmaceuticals to treat oncology, virology, neuroscience, immunology and metabolic diseases. Before joining bioAffinity Technologies in 2016, he was with Southwest Research Institute where he helped develop the Institute’s pharmaceuticals services and bioengineering business. Dr. Bauta was Associate Director of Science at Genzyme Corporation and held a similar position at Ilex Products, Inc., where he was responsible for the discovery, development and FDA approval of multiple therapeutics. He holds several patents and has published in the journal Science and more than a dozen other scientific journals and conference proceedings. Dr. Bauta received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
Luis Martinez, Ph.D., Director, Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Trinity University
An El Paso TX native, Dr. Martínez has served on the faculty of Rollins College, Eastern Florida State College and the University of Texas at El Paso. He was also a Senior Scientist at the Scripps Research Institute-Florida. Dr. Martínez’s research effort is focused on the synthesis and application of small molecules to probe and study the biology of infectious disease, cancer, immune response, oxidative stress and cell cycle control.
He is a 1991 honors graduate in chemistry from Trinity University and obtained his master’s and doctorate from Harvard University. At Harvard, he developed a chemistry process that led to his first patent. While teaching at UT El Paso, his research led to obtaining a second patent.
The course is offered for credit, but seats are available for anyone who wishes to attend a class to learn about the topic that week.
